Highgate Cemetery Walk

I'm really enjoying this week of no work, I don't miss it one bit! LOL

Today we went to visit Highgate Cemetery. It's just a short bus ride and walk away but I had never been there before even though I had been interested in visiting for years.

As we approached the cemetery, walking up Swains Lane we saw many old long forgotten graves through the fence, almost lost in the long grass and ivy.

We were only able to visit the East Cemetery as the West side is only open at certain times and for guided tours only.

A lot of the cemetery is very overgrown, you might think unkempt but in fact it's beautiful, natural and perfectly peaceful.

Some of the graves are very old, just about ruins, and yes a lot of them have obviously not been at all cared for, maybe there is no one left to care in their family.

I found the place fascinating and very thought provoking.

We saw a couple of famous graves, that of Karl Marx and the writer Douglas Adams. I'm sure there are more well known people there, I just don't know of them myself!

After we left the cemetery we bought some sandwiches and snacks and sat in Parliament Hill Fields, which is part of Hampstead Heath. It's so green and lush and being a weekday there weren't too many people around so it was wonderfully peaceful. The view of London from the top of the hill is stunning, it's amazing! You can see as far away as Canary Wharf, The Gherkin, St Paul's Cathedral etc..

From Hampstead Heath we walked all the way home, it's not far on the bus but on foot it was rather a long way. My feet need a rest tomorrow, rain is forecast so maybe it will be a good day for a rest!

Of course I took loads of photo's and if you are interested I think they are well worth a look through!

What Makes These Photos Un-Interesting?

As many will know I love taking photo's.. I don't think I'll ever be a "good" photographer, but that doesn't matter to me.

I have uploaded a lot of them to Flickr and for fun, some time ago I started using the Dopiaza Set Manager.

This gives you options of automatically creating sets based on various criteria such as interestingness, date posted and tags, or even from a random set of photographs.

You can have up to 500 photo's in each set, which is perhaps a little too much, at the moment I have 250 in each, apart from the random set which is limited to 20.

Now I don't really know exactly how this works apart from, I guess, if a photo gets a lot of comments and views then it must be interesting and I presume vice versa.

Personally I think several of the photo's in my least interesting set are in fact rather interesting, but maybe I am biased, and I guess with a set of 250 it has to be filled with something!

Make Your Photo's Appear Very Old, Very Easily!

I love playing around with photo's, adding effects and just generally fiddling around to make them look a bit, maybe, unusual. I use many different applications for this depending on what I fancy trying at the time.

Today I came across a website where you just upload a photo and it very quickly converts it, making it look very old, so of course I had a go and I think it's rather clever!

At The British Museum

Went to the British Museum today as it's a Bank Holiday, it was really interesting.

I was last there many years ago when the kids were very young and we went as part of a school trip. It's not far from where I live, a 30 minute bus ride and it's free entry, so I don't know why I hadn't been for so long, I guess it's lack of time.

The majority of people there did seem to be tourists, funny how when you live somewhere you don't visit too much.

I took lots of photos, some are not that brilliant as it's a bit dark in some of the rooms and of course a lot of the objects are behind glass, so reflections become quite a problem.

I was going to post a few but I couldn't make up my mind, so I posted them all in this slideshow made from the photos posted on Flickr..

Back To Ealing

Yesterday the weather was lovely, the warmest day of the year so far. So not to waste the opportunity of getting out and enjoying it my partner (Rob) and I went to Ealing in West London.

There's nothing particularly special about Ealing but I wanted to go back and visit as it was where I had lived for a while back in the late 70's, not long after I had first come to live in London from Oxfordshire.

Considering how many years ago that was, so little had changed!

We walked in to Walpole Park and sat in the wonderfully warm sun admiring the beautifully colourful flowers and just enjoying the peace. (I must be old! lol)

It was a nice day, the edge taken off a little though by the fact I had a persistent headache the whole time.. Will these hormones ever leave me in peace!

Of course I took some photos which you are very welcome to view

Exploring Portobello Road

Well, I did as planned, went out for a while.

My partner came with me, a little reluctantly though I may say. He's not really as adventurous as me.

I love to go out, exploring areas and corners of London that I've not been to before but he prefers to stay home at weekends as he's had a busy week. But me, even though I've also had a hectic week like to get out, "A change is as good as a rest"

So sometimes it's a bit difficult as I don't know many/any people who like to do as I do, so it's either drag him along or go by myself. I'm not too keen on going places by myself as I always feel - well I don't know, weird.

Do you feel comfortable going places alone?

Anyway, today we went to Portobello Road

It's only a short bus ride away and in all the years I have lived in London I had never been there.

It was interesting, but not necessarily my cup of tea as I'm not that excited by antiques, but I took a few photos and enjoyed being out - until it rained, hailed and blew a rather cold gale!

Haircut Photos

My hair had been growing like weeds the last few weeks so today I took the plunge and got it cut back to how I had it a few months ago. Not my most favourite pastime going to the hairdressers but a necessary evil.. It now feels a lot lighter and I'm quite pleased with the outcome!

Happy Jumping Days

My daughter found some oldish photos of herself taken whilst jumping on a bed - not sure where they were taken but they showed she was having fun.

We thought they'd look good all combined as an animation - so my partner did the clever bit and here we have it!

My Too Short Weekend

Where oh where has this weekend gone!! No sooner than I walk out of work on a Friday evening then it seems it's almost time to go back. I am seriously thinking about asking to work 4 days a week as this often feels like it's overwhelming me.

Yesterday I went to Oxford Street, the biggest shopping street in London. I didn't stay long as I am not fond of crowds, my main reason was to return some stuff to Marks and Spencer - they are so good as they give 3 months return period.

By the way if you do visit the M&S site the young red head girl featured there is Lily Cole, now a top model, not so long ago an ordinary girl who went to school with my youngest daughter and slept over with us a couple of times!

Today, with my partner, I went to take some photos in and around the Putney area (South London). The weather was mixed and it did rain quite heavily for a short while, but at least I scratched the itch I had, to go somewhere and take a few shots.

Photophlow And Flickr

Yesterday I think it was, I went to the Photophlow page and requested an invite to this very new, hmm... how can I describe it, Flickr communicator.

Well today I got my invite so I joined and it's fascinating, quite interesting. It's a place where you can view photos from Flickr (including your own) and chat about them with others in a chatroom. You can comment on them directly from the room or send a Tweet to Twitter about the one you are viewing.

As I'm rather slow at typing and have to look at the keys I found it all a bit overwhelming, trying to type and view photos at the same time. It's probably a better idea to stick to rooms with not too many people in. Everyone seems to get their own room anyway, but I sat in mine for a while all alone.

Hmm, I'm not too good as describing what it's all about really. If that interests you then why not go to the site as I did, request an invite, or contact me as I have a couple and I do mean ONLY 2 invites to give away.

Trees

Went walking in Regents Park again this afternoon - as usual took lots of photos..

But in particular I was fascinated by these tree's, some with huge spilts in, some with holes and one with a huge nasty looking growth on the side..

Quick And Easy Send To Flickr

Do you ever wish you could just send a photo to Flickr with a simple right click and it happens almost instantly?

Up till now I could send to Flickr with the right click but then it would take ages to bring up the uploader...

Well today I found something today that does just that, instant upload, it's brilliant!

You do have to download a little something, which is simple and safe, install it, then a new Flickr option becomes visible when you right click, and go to send to...

Couldn't be easier, just have to go to Flickr itself to add tags, etc (if you want to)

How Do You Manage Your Flickr Contacts?

I currently have 204 contacts on Flickr, some people have a whole lot more.

I have a feed to my Google Reader which tells me when any contact has uploaded a photo so I don't miss anything.

However, when you've been away, or unable to read all these feeds for a couple of days there can be close on 600 or more photos to look at.

Now this is way too much for me as I do like to comment on as many as I can, well as many as catch my eye, but it's all another of those cases of it all getting too much.

I'm thinking of whittling my contact list down a little but I always feel bad when I remove someone, like they've offended me or something! How do you let some contacts go?

Do you look at all your contacts photos, everyday? occasionally? how do you manage it all?

An "In" Weekend

I have not stepped outside my flat since leaving work Friday evening (apart from taking out the rubbish)

I don't really like having weekends like this as it seems like my life is all about work, home, work, home. But there has been such a cold wind blowing it put me off doing anything I had even considered doing outside.

I've spent quite a lot of time "dropping" my Entrecard on others sites, although that became rather annoying as either my internet has been particularly slow or it's Entrecard themselves.

I tried on a lot of clothes I've not worn for a while, this only served to reinforce my desire to loose a few pounds on the hips.. Too many chocolates passed my lips over the Christmas period.

NOTE to MY Partner: DO NOT give me anything calorific for Valentines Day!!! LOL

I took some photo's of things around the house:

A Walk In The City Countryside

This weekend was turning into a bit of a lazy one. Which is fine to some extent as both my partner and I work hard all week, it's good to just do nothing sometimes.

But the weather was very nice today, bright and sunny, still chilly but not so cold to be unpleasant, so we went for a walk.

I wish we drove so we could get out of the city, into the countryside more often but as we don't we have to make do with local city countryside, which actually isn't all that bad.

I took these photos in Regents Park today, which is right in the middle of the city, and I think you could just about believe they were somewhere much more rural..

My Adventure In The Arabian Desert

Two weeks ago today was one of the best days I've had. We were in Dubai visiting my son, who that day hired a 4x4 car for us to go off roading in the mountains.

I was so excited as we drove along, out of Dubai itself, through Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, and onwards, the mountains came into view, it was like another world after the hustle and bustle of the last few days.

IMG_3512 (by LadyBanana)

We had our passports ready as we were planning to go through Oman. As we approached the border guards, there was a long queue and several cars were turning back. Not long before we realised a lot of people were being denied access to pass through. We waited patiently, but sadly we also were told or rather just gesticulated at to turn round, to go back.

At this point I was rather disappointed, however my son has a book of alternative routes and places to go. So instead of going through the mountains we decided to go into the desert.

It was a long drive, part way back the way we had come and then onto another route. As we drove along we saw camels in the distance, I was hoping to see some a lot closer up!

When we eventually got off the road I was completely amazed at the beauty of the desert, the sand dunes rising up, all rippled and seemingly untouched as the sand had hidden all traces of those that had been there before.

IMG_4713 (by LadyBanana)

I couldn't wait to get out of the car and just run freely up the dunes, such a sense of vastness, a sense of freedom, we couldn't see another living creature and the silence - well that was something you never experience in the city even in the dead of night!

IMG_3548 (by LadyBanana)

My partner found what we believe to be some old camel bones!

IMG_3550 (by LadyBanana)

As there had been a few showers in the past week the sand dunes seemed quite firm, so my son decided to drive right up a dune - BIG mistake...

When we decided to move on we realised we were STUCK! The sand just clogged up around the back wheels and the more he revved up the engine the deeper the tyres dug in.

I was laughing so much, here we were in the desert with no one else in sight and not much clue what to do. That's where the camel bones came in useful.. I tried digging us out with one, but it wasn't much help!

IMG_3572 (by LadyBanana)

Whilst we were all busy digging, still laughing, getting a teeny bit worried an Arab guy appeared just (it seemed) out of nowhere. He spoke no English, but recognised our predicament and bought out a rope which he tied from his car to ours.

IMG_3575 (by LadyBanana)

Unfortunately the rope snapped as soon as it became taught! The Arab man drove off into the distance leaving us there, still stuck, with a rope dangling uselessly off the back.

A bit more digging, a bit more forceful, desperate effort, on my sons part and amazingly the car suddenly shot forward.

We were free, we could move on, we wouldn't die of thirst and hunger and cold in the desert after all!!

We drove down the dune in the direction the Arab guy had gone, we felt we should give him back his rope. As we approached where he had parked we saw there was quite a little group of men.

IMG_3581 (by LadyBanana)

They were out with their falcons. Some birds were resting on little posts in the ground, some were eating (poor) little chicks and some were flying, swooping down for the meat that one of the guys was swinging around on a rope for him.

We stayed and watched for sometime, although none of these men seemed to speak any English they were very friendly and gave us water to drink.

We then decided to press on and continue our journey, I still wanted to see camels up close!

Didn't have to wait long, I leaped out of the car and took photos, they growled a bit and I was very brave..lol

We drove on, but then noticing the sun was starting to go down we realised we should turn for home, didn't want to be out there in the dark, can only imagine how pitch black dark it would in fact be!

As we drove back we saw other camels, racing camels, being led in groups.

Strange Sunday

Watching, originally uploaded by LadyBanana.

Been an odd day today. Not been able to get on with anything really. No ones fault but mine though.

It's the last day of my holiday, back to work tomorrow. At least Monday is only a short day, I don't start till 3pm.

I'm not looking forward to it, getting back in the routine of drudgery, wishing my life away longing for the next weekend..

I'm sure I'd get a little bored from time to time if I wasn't working but I think I could deal with that if I had a few bob, yep, there's the problem - money! No work, no money! Oh well...

So today I've been fiddling around with photo's as the weather has been too awful to get out and take any new ones.

I wish I was good at photo editing. Part of my partners job is working with Photoshop so he's pretty much an expert. He has occasionally given me a few "lessons" but my memory is poor and I need to write it all down step by step.. It's then I realise he's getting bored, so I give up.

I know there are plenty of online tutorials if I could be really motivated to do them. Maybe in some ways I like just tinkering and seeing what happens!

Well it's now just after 9pm but it feels much much later - very strange. So I think I'll go to bed, I've got a new book to start. I'll probably blog about that sometime as well..

Tired At The Museum

Since returning from Dubai I have not really felt myself. Nothing specific really, just an overwhelming tiredness which I can't seem to get rid of even though I have been sleeping well.

But as I'm off work this week I also wanted to do some of the things I had originally planned to do. One of these was visiting the newly refurbished London Transport Museum.

It's not far on the bus to get there, we spent less than 2 hours looking round and taking some photos, then went for a little walk in the area, by which time I was more than ready to get home again - quite unlike me, but never mind I'm sure it will pass eventually.

Photos Of Dubai

I am so tired today. I could never be one of those people who regularly travel as it really takes it out of me.

Thankfully I have the rest of the week off!

I've now uploaded the holiday photos, there are a lot of them but I hope you'll have a bit of a browse through them either here on the slideshow or on Flickr
