Dozy Me

Photobucket

I went to see my Dr yesterday in the continuing search for a way to deal with the headaches.

She gave me Amitriptyline which I know to be a kind of anti-depressant with a sedative effect.

I’m supposed to take one each night,  last night I took the first.

Today, I’ve been very dozy.

So, another unacceptable medication.. no good for a work day!

She also gave me Sumatriptan to be taken at the onset of pain.

I have tried these before without much success but maybe I didn’t take them in time, not sure.

I’m not keen on taking any of these though. They all have some rather unpleasant side-effects and I’m a very sensitive bod in that I am very likely to suffer.

Not had a headache for a week now (whoo hoo) so feel tempted not to bother but I know when I do get one it seriously spoils my life for about 4 days.

I really don’t know what to do now.

  1. I do sympathise, it must be awful. I get three day headaches occasionally but not too often. They lay me out for the count though when they do. GP said "my age" of course and as I have got less menopausal symptoms the headaches has got less frequent so maybe there's some hope. Might be worth a trip to the homeopath or herbalist, you never know.

  2. Gosh that's tough. You can't live with a headache on the other hand you can't live with being dozy and other side effects either. Maybe once you get used to them you will be less dozy?

Thank you for all your kind wishes recently when Faz wasn't feeling well, everyone's healing purrs and thoughts obviously helped to get her better.

  3. I was on amitriptyline for a good long while, started at 10mg (one tiny blue pill) an hour before bedtime each night, up to 2 pills but never got to the ideal dose of 3.

It's supposed to bring you down to that deep level of rem sleep needed to dissipate the migraines... I can't say that it worked and I can't say that it didn't, you know? My migraines are hormone-related, I know that now.

But yes, if you don't get at least 8 hours of sleep you stay sleepy all day! :-0

Hope you find something that works... head pain is debilitating.

  4. I assume they've done the usual questions, possibly neurological workup, even an MRI or cat scan?

  5. You're not having much luck are you? I'm not a great headache sufferer but I can imagine how debilitating they can be for you - fingers crossed you won't need the meds, I blame age!!

  6. I've been having waves of headaches lately (my age?) which is a new thing for me, but fortunately they've not quite reached the point where I've had to seek medical help.

On the other hand, I have one particular colleague who gets migraine-headaches that lay her out for three days at a stretch and I've seen how she suffers, even with medication.

I know that doesn't help you in the slightest ... but you have my sympathy.

  7. So sorry it has not worked. Please don't give up. Tell your doctor what you told us. Maybe she can find something that does not knock you out. Zzz

  8. I can sympathise fully, have been though the same thing myself, have you tried any alternative methods? (the good thing with alternative methods is you can still take all prescribed medication along side it for extra kick if you need it)

I have a few ideas that I have tried and tested (and still use) over the years, send me an email if you would like to know more about them.

  9. Not sleeping is never nice. I can go for a couple of weeks without sleeping properly.
Taking medication is a pain in itself and even worse if it makes you zombie like the next day, which is hopeless.
They need to rethink things by the sounds of it.;0(

  10. Meds that make you sleepy are the worst. No advice from me, I don't experience headaches other than the garden variety type. Hope you find your cure!

  11. Researchers in Germany found that peppermint oil was as effective as acetaminophen, the pain reducer in Tylenol and Datril, in reducing headache pain. To get a similar effect, you can simply rub a mixture of 10% peppermint-oil in ordinary alcohol. Simply rub the solution into the forehead and temples it is said that you will feel relief within 15 minutes.

    Give it a try.
