Mabel, Now Spayed And Chipped

Mabel is home and is not a very happy kitty.

She can't seem to find a comfortable position to get any sleep.

As she moves around she has a limp and on the few occasions one of us has had to pick her up she has cried, groaned, hissed and got very distressed.

We have offered her both food and water but she hasn't touched it yet.

I find it quite upsetting to see her looking so sad.

As you can see from the photo her operation was done on the left side and she was shaven right under her tummy as well. She has no visible stitches to bite but she has been trying to lick the wound.

I think in the US it's more common to operate on the actual tummy, seems the side ones are done in UK.

I'm just hoping she will be a bit better tomorrow..

  1. I've never seen a spaying done that way. You're right it's done on the tummy in the US and seems to be a less invasive procedure. Either way the jobs done and she will live a long and healthy life.
She shoulld be feeling fine in a couple of days.

  2. Awww...poor girly. But she'll bounce back quickly. It's just hard seeing them so vulnerable and in discomfort.

Yes, we do them on the tummy here too ... I don't remember any of my girls being out of commission for any legnth of time - but Mabel was home very quickly. I think my cats have stayed in overnight. When they came home I mostly left them to themselves to sleep and heal. After a day they were pretty much getting back to normal.

    Mabel's a sweetie! So pretty :)

  3. It frustrates you when you don't know what they want or what you can do.

  4. I had no idea there might be a difference in the way the operation is done. My cats all stayed at the vet overnight and then came home the next day. So maybe you're seeing the discomfort we were fortunate enough to miss. But I'm sure Mabel will be just fine. It's just hard because you know she has no idea what just happened.

  5. Wow, I wonder why the difference, side in the UK and tummy in the US and Canada? That's interesting! (Might be worth a Google - I'm a Google junkie ;-)

My cats were always a little annoyed after spaying, but I don't recall any evidence of pain. I think they were just offended at the indignity!! lol. Mabel will be her old self in a few days :-)

  8. It is really interesting how they do it on the side there. Here it is about a 1" incision right in the center, below the belly button. I think Mabel should be feeling a lot better by morning.

  9. Aw, bless her. Give her a day or two, and she'll be back to her usual self. You've actually done her a favour, although you may not feel like it at the moment. You've extended her life, and spared her from suffering nasty diseases of the reproductive system, which she would be at risk from, if she had babies. I hope she's much better in the morning.

  11. awe poor sweetie... you'll be amazed to see how fast our pets recuperate from surgeries.

just as their lives are shorter than ours, their bodies heal faster, too.

    tuna for the patient! ;-)

  13. Aw! She's so cute. I hope she's better soon. Pets can heal really fast sometimes. She might even be up and playing today just like her old self.

  16. She'll be fine, I'm quite sure. We had Bertie on a drip at the vet (we took him there because he wasn't eating) and when we got him home we were (read- I was) having to feed him by syringe every two hours. I was in tears for a day, thinking it would be his last. Next day he was leaping around the house like a kitten, chasing his ball and generally delighting in feeling better. I hope and believe Mabel will be the same.

  17. That scar looks strange. Ours all had a short, straight scar.
Each cat is different. Most of ours have taken a day to get over it. Sukie came straight back and as soon as she was let out of her cage, she ran to food and ate like she was starving. Then she started to play and jump about! That was weird. They usually appear confused and miserable for at least a day. She will be fine.
