A Day Trip To Witney

Had a full day today, went on a trip to the town where I grew up - Witney in Oxfordshire, which is about 65 miles away.

My youngest daughter was the chauffeur for the day and took myself and my partner to see all the old places I remembered including my old home.

I have no family left there to visit, but we did visit the cemetery where some of them are buried but sadly I was unable to find the grave.

What struck me most about the town is how much it's grown. Every little piece of spare land now seems to be built on with lots and lots of new homes.

I'd say the most repeated phrase of the day (by me anyway) was - "That wasn't there before"!!!

The last time I was in that area was back on the mid 1990's so well over 10 years ago, so obviously it would change in that time.

However there were plenty of old familiar places still there, but isn't it funny how they mostly seemed smaller than I recall!

Of course I took loads of photos and am currently uploading to Flickr so hopefully tomorrow I will post some to show you.

We also visited the nearby village of Minster Lovell which was just as lovely as I remember with thatched roof cottages and pretty gardens.

There are also some wonderful old ruins there, but I'll save that for another post.

Everything always looks smaller when revisited. Especially from childhood :O)

It's always strange going back to where you grew up. I did it ONCE many years ago and so much was new. I heard that there has been much development since then and I suspect I would not even recognize it anymore.

I'm never too keen to go back, though I'm not quite sure why. It makes me very nostalgic I suppose.

From my own personal experience nothing is ever as good when you re-visit somewhere you loved after many years of being away, it just dosnt seem to have the old magic it used to have.

I can never resist visiting old favorite places tho and seeing how they change over the years.
